“I wanted to be the king of the high life”

Winner of Best Foreign Language Film at the 2014 Oscars, Paolo Sorrentino returns to Rome with The Great Beauty, and what a beauty the city is through his eyes. Our city guide is Jep Gambardella (Sorrentino regular Toni Servillo), a dapper gentleman in his sixties who spends some time writing and more time hosting raging all-night parties for the rich and famous from his terrace balcony overlooking the Colosseum. The revelation of the death of his first love sends Jep out strolling through the ancient and enchanting streets of Rome with both a renewed curiosity and a sense of ennui, reflecting on his life, and pondering his future. Inspired heavily by the style of master Italian director, Federico Fellini, The Great Beauty has been lauded as one of Sorrentino’s best films.
