“It seems some folk are getting squeamish around here”

The astonishing feature debut of Australian writer-director Mirrah Foulkes, Judy & Punch is a darkly comic tale of revenge, eccentric fantasy and female rage. It’s the mid-17th century in the mythical European town of Seaside and married puppeteers Judy (Mia Wasikowska) and Punch (Damon Herriman) are mounting their latest marionette show for the rowdy locals. With her arrogant husband prone to whisky-fuelled bouts of violence, Judy relies on her superior entertainment skills to keep the show afloat. But when one of Punch’s drunken spirals goes tragically wrong, Judy decides to ally herself with the town’s outcasts and wreak heady vengeance on all those who have wronged her.

“A determinedly offbeat, often delightful mix of satire, whimsy and social critique” — Variety
