“If we took your bag and placed it here, would that make it art?”

Male fragility. Misguided performance art. Social media. The obscene luxury of the ruling class. Little is off-limits for Swedish satirist Ruben Östlund (Force Majeure). His 2017 Palme d’Or winner The Square turns a deliciously critical eye to the dysfunctional foibles of the art world. Christian (Claes Bang) is the self-absorbed curator of a contemporary art museum in central Stockholm. As he begins an awkward affair with an American journalist (Elizabeth Moss), a series of increasingly absurd calamities begin to infiltrate his comfortable surrounds. Between its contentious condoms and exploding children, The Square is an outrageous pastiche of art world conventions and social morality.

“Smart, sharp, deliciously uncomfortable… An excoriating razor-burn of a movie.” — The Playlist
