“Somewhere I read that the wrong train can lead you to the right station”

A world-wide charmer, The Lunchbox stars two strangers – the late, great Irrfan Khan as Saajan, a lonely accountant on the verge of retirement and Nimrat Kaur as Ila, a young woman who has started to feel disconnected from her passive husband. Every day in Mumbai, lunches are delivered by a dabbawala, a person who collects food from worker’s home in the morning and takes it to their office. One day this usually failproof system gets it wrong and Saajan ends up with the meal Ila had prepared for her undeserving husband. Through a series of notes slipped in with the food, the two find themselves uncovering details about themselves and each other.

“The comedy is more wry than uproarious, the melodrama gently poignant rather than operatic, and the sentimentality just sweet enough to be satisfying.” — The New York Times
