“You’re making a movie, right?”

Filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been banned from making movies for 20 years. Since his ban was imposed, Panahi has bravely defied the Iranian government and made four films in secret: This Is Not a Film (2011), Closed Curtain (2013), Tehran Taxi (2015) and 3 Faces (2018). Tehran Taxi sees Panahi employ the clever and creative guise of a taxi driver with a camera on his dashboard. As he drives around Tehran, the camera captures candid and moving moments with his passengers, who are men and women, young and old, rich and poor, traditionalists and modernists. This Berlinale Golden Bear winner is a humane portrait of a filmmaker, his country and his fellow citizens.

“This spry, sharp and relentlessly clever middle finger to censorship is Panahi’s boldest act of defiance to date” — Time Out
