“What do you know about my core skills?”

When French astronaut Sarah (Eva Green) gets selected to go on a year-long mission to the International Space Station, it’s a dream come true, but one that comes at a cost. She must undergo a gruelling training regime, where her gender puts her under extra scrutiny from her chauvinistic American crew member (Matt Dillon). Hardest of all is leaving behind her young daughter Stella, with whom she shares an inseparable bond. Filmed at real-life astronaut training centres, French director Alice Winocour (co-writer of Mustang) delivers a space movie with a difference: one that trades Hollywood superheroe for human fragility. With a beautifully atmospheric Ryuichi Sakamoto score and excellent performances from Eva Green and the supporting cast (including Lars Eidinger and Sandra Hüller of Toni Erdmann fame), Proxima offers a tender, believable study of the process of separating from Earth.
