“The moment I met you, I knew I was in for something extraordinary”

Laurence is an accomplished award winning novelist who teaches literature at a Montreal high school. Passionately in love with his girlfriend Frederique (‘Fred’), he reveals to her on his 30th birthday that he’s spent his life feeling like a woman trapped inside a man’s body. Laurence Anyways follows the title character’s transformation, the reactions from friends, family, coworkers and loved ones. Though set, as always, in the distinctive cultural milieu of Dolan’s hometown of Montreal, the issues of gender and identity explored in Laurence Anyways have universal relevance, being often neglected topics of ever-increasing importance. This film won the Queer Palm at Cannes in 2012, with Suzanne Clément also winning the Un Certain Regard Best Actress Award for her touching portrayal of Fred.
