“I convert the energy of life into dots of the universe”

From the walls of MoMA to the leather-goods of Louis Vuitton, the colourful polka dot motifs of 89-year-old Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama are no less than iconic. But her journey to creative success and critical acceptance followed decades of struggle: against an abusive upbringing and lifelong mental illness; against a conservative Japanese art world; and against Western racism and sexism. This vibrant new documentary follows her ambitious journey from her home country to New York’s avant-garde art scene, coming-of-age with her Pop Art peers and surpassing them with her stunning forays into installation, performance, painting, sculpture, fashion design, film and writing.

“Provides ample, illuminating access to an artist’s way of thinking and working” — The New York Times
