“Goodnight, sweetheart”

The remarkable first feature of Rosemary Myers, Girl Asleep is an exuberant, fully realised vision of ‘70s Australian suburbia. Greta (Bethany Whitmore) is about to turn 15, and experiencing all the joyful discoveries and terrifying anxieties which come with it. Making matters worse, she’s the new girl in town, the only friend she’s made is an insufferably sweet geek, a trio of mean girls are taunting her daily, plus an overbearing mum and an endlessly dad joke-cracking dad. This funny, sweet and original film uses surreal effects and sharp, Wes Anderson-esque set design to relatably capture a tumultuous stage of life.

“An effervescent splash of teen life that delights the eyes, warms the heart and tickles the funny bone” — Screen Daily
