“I see that I’m a little piece of a big, big universe”

Nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Beasts of the Southern Wild is the miraculous, moving debut feature from Benh Zeitlin. In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world, six-year-old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) lives with her tough but loving father Wink (Dwight Henry). Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, Hushpuppy believes the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm alters her reality. Within her universe ‘busted’ temperatures rise, ice-caps melt and an army of prehistoric beasts is unleashed. Desperate to repair the damage and save her ailing father, Hushpuppy must bravely journey to the outside world.

“A dreamy but strikingly immediate and frayed-at-the-edges, child’s-eye view of life on the margins of America” — Time Out
