“Are you supposed to convince me?”

Winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlinale, Barbara is the first in Berlin School director Christian Petzold’s trilogy of ’Love in Times of Oppressive Systems’ that includes Phoenix and Transit (also on Movie Night). A simmering GDR thriller set in 1980, Petzold’s frequent collaborator Nina Hoss stars as Barbara, a talented East Berlin doctor transferred to a provincial hospital as punishment for applying for an exit visa to the West. While she waits for her lover on the outside to plot her escape, she must contend with the suspicion and contempt of her colleagues, who are monitoring her every move.
