“My apartment is not for sale”

Winner of the Sydney Film Prize at SFF 2016, Aquarius takes place in Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho’s native city of Recife. The 65-year-old Clara (played brilliantly by the incomparable Sonia Braga) is a fiercely independent and intelligent retired music critic and the last resident of the seaside Aquarius building. While every other apartment has been acquired by a development company with plans for the site, Clara politely refuses to sell, despite increasingly aggressive requests from the company. So follows an escalating battle between Clara and the firm. Through Clara, Mendonça masterfully reflects on an entire society in this powerful and complex film.
